CRWIFI will now be providing fiber optics for commercial clients in multiple areas around Costa Rica. We will also be building and designing new fiber optic networks for commercial clients. Costa Rica Fiber Optic Networks have been increasing in both popularity and size throughout the country. Fiber to the home (FTTH) is being studied in multiple towns and cities right now.

For Internet usage fiber is typically more reliable than copper based solutions such as cable modems and DSL. That is not always the case though because much of the fiber optical cable in Costa Rica is aerial. That means that mud slides, crazy drivers, large trucks, and electrical poles that are way over loaded with wires will cause issues and damage the fiber lines. For the best solution fiber optical cable should be ran underground and backed up with a wireless internet connection of some type. With the use of a router that can manage multiple WAN (wide area network) connections to the public, you will be insured of excellent service close to 99.9% of the time.

The Virtual Private Network is valuable for those who travel often or want to add another layer of security for their web browsing or disguise the location of their computer. Most often in Costa Rica, VPN is used to access Netflix, iTunes, Pandora and other U.S. based video and music streaming websites.

First, what is VPN?

VPN is a form of Wide Area Network (WAN) connecting a computer in one location to a specific server or servers in another location that can be chosen by the user.

The key feature of a VPN, is its ability to use public networks like the Internet rather than rely on private leased lines. VPN technologies implement restricted-access networks that utilize the same cabling and routers as a public network, and they do so without sacrificing features or basic security.

A VPN supports at least three different modes of use:

Remote access client connections

LAN-to-LAN internetworking

Controlled access within an intranet

VPN Pros and Cons

There is a lot of marketing hype with VPN. In reality, VPNs provide just a few specific potential advantages.

The disadvantages include security and performance concerns and vendors that are not compatible.

These network protocols have become popular as a result of VPN developments:

PPTP

L2TP

IPsec

SOCKS

Authentication allows VPN clients and servers to correctly establish the identity of people on the network. Encryption allows potentially sensitive data to be hidden from the general public.

Prices for VPNs generally range from zero to about $50 per year.

There has been some discussion on some forums about using Magic Jack to make phone calls internationally. Some of the responses indicate there may be some confusion about how the gadget works.

A computer is NOT needed, but internet connection IS needed. If hooked to the internet via a computer, the computer does not have to be powered up for Magic Jack Plus to work.

Magic Jack Plus lets you use the unit with or without a computer. Without a computer you plug the magic jack usb into a power plug adapter and plug in a ethernet cable from either a router or directly from a modem. If you want to use a computer you just plug the usb into the computer and do not have to use the direct ethernet connection.

You should also have an understanding of your home network. There may be times that you’ll have to reboot your modem and router to clear up problems.

Don’t forget, when you loose power, you lose your internet connection, and your phone.

Hello from CRWIFI Ltda.
Client antenna upgrades will be done as needed.

*Free upgrade for residential clients
Virtually all standard accounts will reach download speeds up to double their current rate in the following week. If you have a 2meg download rate currently then you will see speeds up to 4meg after your account has been updated.

Discounts up to 30% off (limited time offer only)
Available only between now and November 10th, 2012 (residential accounts only)

New Packages Available
Speeds up to 8 meg are now available in some areas. Please see our residential prices at: http://crwifi.com/wireless-internet.html
Make sure to note that we Double Speed our connections now. See disclaimer on web page.

Tell a Friend $$$
If you give us a lead and they sign up we will pay you up to 100% of their first months service. If you give us six or more per year your annual service will be free. (up to a $720 value). This only applies to residential clients.

News
Automated system status notification.
We are continually doing what we can to reduce downtime. As far as we know we have the lowest downtime and network incidents of any residential Internet provider in Costa Rica. Still there is room for improvement. The other day a client made a recommendation that we felt was a great idea. When we have issues it is difficult to make you aware of them. Many of you try fixing your router, unplugging things, and calling us to figure out what the situation is. We understand your frustration for sure. How about if we “Text You” by use of your cell phone just to let you know that we are having technical issues in your area? If you like this idea drop us an email.

Please read the disclaimer below
*All specials, discounts, and free upgrades to download speeds are only available in certain sections of CRWIFI’s wireless network. Some areas/clients will not qualify for these upgrades due to equipment and signal levels. A test period of six weeks will be used for all upgrades to verify quality of service. In the event the network in your area has service quality issues pertaining to interference, or weak signal, we reserve the right to return you to your original package. If you have questions drop us an email or give us a call.

Technical Improvements for those that like the details:
1. We currently are directly connected to fiber at both our core and backup connections.
2. 80% or more of the network now has backup redundancy.
3. Everything is now centralized out of our main office in Atenas.
4. We have added new transmitters and updated others to increase bandwidth.
5. Greatly improved power backup systems. Most can sustain 16+ hours with no power.
6. More staff to improve support, billing, and response time for installs and service calls.
7. Increased our coverage area to 85% of the central valley.

7. Aumento de cobertura a 85% del valle central.

Dear CRWIFI Customer,

Starting early Sunday morning (October 21st, 2012) until 11:35am our core provider had a fiber trunk go down and they reverted to a backup connection. At that time they reduced our connection speed by 95%. Shortly after that we realized that our backup connections that we had in place did not take over automatically. The fault was our backup algorithm did not transfer over to our backup connections because it could still see the Internet (barely). It did not take into consideration how slow the internet was.

I’m Ray and I’m the primary engineer on this network. I transitioned the system over to our backup connections manually so we could provide basic browsing and email. Streaming video and voice services though would have not worked correctly during that time. I apologize for the inconvenience and quality of service this morning.

Over the next few weeks I will be working on improving our backup systems so they will kick in more smoothly. If it requires downtime to do so, you will be notified first.

If you have any questions or complaints please give us a call or drop us an email.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

Ray Akers

Dear CRWIFI Customer,

Lightning season has continued to cause damage throughout our network and that of other companies throughout the country as well. Please read over the following info and give us a call if you have any questions at all regarding it’s content.

When should you disconnect cables from an outside source?

We recommend that any time your house will be unattended for a short or long period of time that you disconnect all cables coming from outside sources. This should also be done before or during storms if at all possible.

What cables should you disconnect?

Some examples of cables you should disconnect are:

*Coaxial cables from cable and satellite companies such as SKY, CABLETICA or TIGO.
DO NOT DISCONNECT COAX CABLES DURING A STORM. If there is a nearby lightning strike, static can travel through the cable and severely shock you. Try disconnecting them before storms.

*Incoming phone lines from ICE.

* Network cables such as the one provided by CRWIFI.

* Any cable possible that plugs into a 110V/220V outlet in your home.

How does this benefit you?

By doing this, you can ensure that there will not be any copper contact from an outside source, significantly reducing the chances of high voltage surges coming into your home and damaging appliances and/ or equipment.

Properly disconnecting the CRWIFI System.
Our radio antenna has a power supply located in your home where it connects to the cable from our antenna, the cable to your router or internal network, and a power adapter to a standard electrical outlet. Images have been attached to give an example of what they look like and how they should connect. We recommend that you disconnect all cables from it to avoid possible unnecessary damage to the device. Please remember, taking a few seconds to disconnect this device before you leave can save you excessive amounts of downtime until which time we can get to the location and repair or replace the installed equipment.

Dangers and consequences of lightning.
As you may already know, a single lightning strike within close enough proximity can damage just about every appliance plugged into an outlet in your home, costing you a lot of money for replacement based upon the warranty status of each item as well. The only truly efficient way to avoid this kind of damage would be to physically unplug your devices from the electricity. We advise that you unplug whatever may be in your control to disconnect (TV’s, Microwaves, Routers, Stereos, etc.), powering off is not enough.

Thank you very much for your time and for forming part of our CRWIFI network.

Regards,

CRWIFI Team

Saludos,

Equipo CRWIFI

Dear CRWIFI Customer,

We would like to inform you that based up the weather tonight (Monday, September 3rd), at approximately 11pm we will be interrupting service for up to three hours to install a fiber link between our tower and office here in Atenas. This upgrade is to help reduce the chance of a severe failure in service do to a direct hit by lightning in the future at our tower. Please confirm if you continue with any form of issue after this timeframe.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

CRWIFI Team
